QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN HIRING A CONCRETE CONTRACTOR

You want to hire a contractor that has experience doing the work over a long period of time and has surpassed many different obstacles.
Since 1981, Rose City Concrete & Construction has been passing on their accumulated experience from generation to generation in the construction industry.

This question is a great gauge to see if they’ve done many projects like yours.
Twelve of our years in business were spent as City of Portland sidewalk contractors. We don’t do new construction, we repair existing surfaces.
Both commercial and residential projects, including:

  • Decorative concrete
  • Pool decks
  • Patios
  • Walkways/sidewalks
  • Curbs
  • Driveways
  • RV parking area
  • Outdoor kitchen spaces
  • More

If they don’t have examples they’re proud to share, that may be a red flag. You could ask if they have references to share.
We have many examples! Go here: rosecityconcreterepair.com/our-work

If they’re busy, that’s a great sign. If they’re ready right away, well, you could probably read into to that a bit more. If you have a quick deadline, see if they’re able to meet your deadline.
We are quite busy, especially during the spring and summer months. Working in the Pacific Northwest comes with occasional weather delays, but we make it work and get projects done in a timely manner. Make sure you have a tentative timeline in mind during the bidding process.

This is good to know to get an idea of how many people are going to be on your property. If they don’t have a quick and clear response on this, they may be lacking experience.
Our Lead Foreman, Steve Winter (Melissa’s husband), is on site and manages our staff which ranges  from 3-7 people, depending on the project.

Bigger concrete projects, like walls, commercial walkways, structures could take a week or more. Smaller projects, like driveways, should take 2-3 days.

Great question to ask to gauge expertise! Your contractor should have an answer for you off the cuff. If they are a little shaky upon answering, there’s a good chance that they aren’t as experienced as they should be or are doing subpar work.

If the concrete is in the right of way (sidewalk, driveway apron, anything pedestrians walk on), then most likely yes, you will need a permit. The only work on your property that would require a permit would be large structural repairs.

This is so important to make sure the team on your property has experience and training in safe work practices. It’s also crucial to make certain that they have liability insurance and workman’s comp to ensure that you will not incur any extra expenses if they were to have an accident on your property.
Rose City has a very specific safety protocol that we follow and yes, we are insured and have workman’s comp to cover our staff.

Make sure your contractor has a contract that details the work they will do for you and an estimate as well. Make sure you have a clear understanding of what is covered, what is expected and what is guaranteed.
Rose City provides a contract and guarantees all work and material.
